About me

Katie Dobson BMus MMus MSc

Hi 👋 I’m Katie, music therapist at Kairos Music Therapy. I trained in music therapy at Queen Margaret University, graduating with Distinction in 2026.

Prior to becoming a music therapist, I trained extensively in music at Royal Holloway and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and began a career focussed on opera and classical music. Music had always been a huge part of my life and seemed to hold a power beyond merely the aesthetic. Music helped an awkward teen to stand tall and find confidence and offered a way to explore and express my feelings even when I couldn’t name or understand them.

I found myself working in many different fields along my journey. In 2021, I began working in the charity sector, eventually beginning to work in a supportive role for adults with learning disabilites. I fell in love with this work, finding fulfilment and a different viewpoint on the world. Looking for a way to combine two burgeoning passions - music and caring professions - I came across music therapy. I knew very quickly that this was the path I wanted to pursue.

During training, I gained experience providing group and individual music therapy for children with special educational needs and adults living with dementia, helping to set up a new music therapy service in a residential care home. All in all - I’ve worked with people from age 2 - 97!
